The spookiest time of year is fast approaching, where we all start to replace summer sunshine with skeletons. It’s officially Halloween season!

The international travel restrictions throughout Europe could make Halloween look slightly different this year, especially for anyone that usually travels to spooky destinations around the world. Don’t fret though, as there are still plenty of UK-based activities that will get you into the spooky spirit.

Plus, we’ve made our Caxton Card fee-free in the UK, which makes half-term spending even easier!

Pumpkin picking

Pumpkin-picking has become an annual Halloween activity enjoyed by families and couples alike, with ‘pick-your-own-pumpkin’ farms popping up all over the UK.

Whilst anyone can run to the local Sainsburys to grab a pumpkin - it’s much more fun to make a day of it and enjoy a true pumpkin picking experience.

If you’re based in London, there are a number of surrounding pumpkin patches to explore, such as Tulleys Farm, Crockford Bridge Farm in Surrey or Priory Farm in Surrey.

Jack the Ripper tour

Spooky, haunted tours are conducted throughout the year, however, there is higher demand for them around Halloween.

A particular favourite is the Jack the Ripper tour in London, where tourists will find themselves transported back to the streets of the 19th century East End, to explore the murder mystery that has been terrifying people for more than 125 years.

This is just one example of the spooky halloween tours though - there are plenty more scattered around the UK.

Backyard and rooftop cinemas

One of the best parts about Halloween season is the array of spooky films that become available to watch.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that the pandemic will get in the way of your Halloween cinema fix - as there are a number of backyard / openair cinemas that are still offering a spooky film schedule this year.

There will be films appropriate for all family members, varying from family-friendly films like Hocus Pocus, to comedy-horror film Shaun of the Dead.

Haunted castle tours

Castles can be scary at the best of times, but exploring a haunted castle tour around the Halloween period brings a new level of adrenaline.

Warwick Castle offers an entire week of spooky excursions - notably the UK’s only Horrible Histories maze. Alternatively, another castle in the North of England that hosts Halloween-inspired tours is Carlisle castle.

The UK is blessed with historical architecture, so you’ll have plenty of castles to choose from!

Don’t forget, we’ve changed our product offering to enable all Caxton Customers to use their Caxton Card in the UK, fee-free.* You can now tap away on your contactless card in Cornwall, Brighton or Edinburgh...the possibilities are endless!
